About Stefan Avalos

Stefan’s early life started out being trained as a classical violinist. As a violinist, he won major competitions and was a soloist with, among others, the Philadelphia orchestra. Though touted a child prodigy, even at an early age he knew his true love was film.

In 1993, he wrote, produced and directed his first feature film, The Game.

In 1997, Stefan partnered with Lance Weiler to write, direct, produce and co-star in The Last Broadcast. The Last Broadcast received international acclaim as the first desktop based feature film and then went on to many festivals, winning Best Feature Film Silver Prize at The Chicago Underground Film Festival.

The trek continued when, partnering with Esther Robinson and David Beard, Wavelength Releasing was created. In October 1998, Wavelength Releasing made cinematic history with the first fully digital national theatrical release of a feature film via satellite. In 1999, The Last Broadcast became the first feature motion picture to screen digitally at the Cannes Film Festival. Through theatrical, cable, video, and foreign sales, The Last Broadcast has gone on to become, based on budget to profit ratio, one of the most profitable movies in history.

Stefan has been recognized as “one of the twenty five people helping to reinvent entertainment…” by Wired magazine. Stories about The Last Broadcast and Stefan have appeared in most major publications including, Time, People, The Wall Street Journal, etc. He has lectured in Europe, The United States, South America, Japan and Canada about digital filmmaking as well as written for numerous publications about the experience.

In 2004, Stefan wrote and directed, The Ghosts of Edendale. The Supernatural thriller, described as Rosemary’s Baby meets The Shining, is distributed by Warner Brothers.

In 2005, Stefan Produced, Paul Tarantino’s Headhunter.

Since 2008, he has been producing and editing television of all sorts, ranging from feature documentary to reality programming.

In 2016, Avalos completed Strad Style, his first feature length documentary. It premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2017 where it won the Grand Jury and Audience Awards for Best Documentary. It went on to be a hit in festivals around the world, garnering thirteen awards. It is distributed by Hulu and Gravitas.

Stefan is the main force behind the boutique post-studio, Caveman Post, which produces visual effects and graphics for Television and Film.

In 2018, Avalos was invited to join Array inc. as Director At Large in a series of experiments demonstrating and developing emergent A.I. technology for motion picture and television special effects. The development of this tech has since been incorporated into many of the AI networks currently being used and further developed. The New York Times published an extensive article, chronicling the company and Avalos’ involvement, establishing them as one of the early developers and adopters of  neural-networks and ML for VFX. Much of their tagging and training is now standard subset in systems ala SORA, KLING, etc.

He is currently in pre-production on THE GLITCH, a true-crime comedy drama based on the incredible story of the Dan Saunders ATM Hack.

Stefan is a member of the PGA, and has produced work for many clients including, HBO, WB, DISNEY, HULU, DISCOVERY NETWORK, UNIVERSAL and more.

When he finds the time, other interests include, playing the classical violin, rockabilly guitar, dabbling in electronics for audio, watch collecting and repair and the restoration of his MCM home.
